Global Village Program~International Youth Build (Day 4-8)

Global Village Program ~

International Youth BuildDay4-8Challenge (Day4-Build)We left the hotel at 7am, and headed to the worksite. We wondered what kind of work we would do. We were separated into the groups. We got heavy metal poles and shovels, and assigned a hole to dig which should be 1.2㎡. “Digging a hole? Won’t be that hard.” That was what we all thought…it was wrong. There were concretes and hard clay, which we had to break by throwing metal poles on the ground. Also from somewhere, water comes out and we also had to take the water out. We fought with concretes and clay, but it never seemed to break. With girls’ power, it was really had to break a small chunk… When we were stuck, we asked professionals for help. They break those in a minute. We tried 10minutes to break that piece and they broke it in a minute. Powerless. Ineffectuality that we felt. Aren’t we disturbing their work? Yet we have to do it, because this is why we came, to be part of the build. During lunch time or rest time, we communicated with local people and played with kids, a fun refreshing time!!We left worksite around 5pm, went back to hotel and rest.

WORK! (Day5,6, &7 –Build)From the first day of the build, we learned the ropes. So we were able to break the concretes and clays better. Yet, doing the same work for day and a half, made us weary. Then there were other new works to do; bending the metal poles and wiring it to make post. We switched works so that nobody gets weary. We started to get used to the work and efficiency went up. We could dig faster than we used to, we could bend wires and connect them faster. As holes finish, we got another work. Mixing rocks and sands with shovels to create cement and bucket brigaded it to the whole, which the post is standing. More work, more fun, but more blisters we got and bled.More and more kids gathered and played with us during the rest. We all enjoyed as if we were kids too. We ran and play tags, and we did some dancing games.

Effort (Day8-Last day of build)As we all get used to the work, we worked more than our best. Seeing the finished 1.2㎡ hole, post standing in that hole, and cement in that hole, we felt that we were able to “help” the work. The powerlessness that we felt first day was gone at that time. In the afternoon, farewell party. Local people thanked us, and we thanked them. Kids danced for us, and we sang for them. We took pictures and said bye. We all wished to work more.
